Every painting starts the same way. A wide brush, black paint, a handful of fast strokes before I can think too hard about them. After that it turns into a negotiation: the work tells me where it wants weight and where it wants to breathe, and mostly I listen. Some pieces get white strokes laid back over the black, pulling a shape out of the dark.

I don’t force a piece to finish in one sitting. Some are done in an afternoon. Others lean against the wall for days until they ask for one more mark, and I’ve learned not to argue with that.
